(JUBA) – The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services on Thursday welcomed Mr John Madol Panther as the new Managing Director of the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC). Panther succeeds James Magok Chilim, who had been the first to lead the state broadcaster since it was elevated to corporation status.
Panther has held several public roles before his new appointment. He served as Minister of Information in the former 32 states and later as Director of Press and Publications at the National Ministry of Information, a position he held until August 2025.
During a congratulatory meeting at SSBC headquarters in Juba, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information, Mr Mawien Bulabek, pledged the ministry’s full support to the new Managing Director. He said the leadership would work with Panther to reinforce the role of SSBC in delivering information to citizens across the country.
The Undersecretary also toured the Government Printing Press facilities located within SSBC to assess the state of equipment. He explained that the ministry aims to ensure the Government Printing Press and the News Agency of South Sudan (NASS) can operate independently in order to improve efficiency and service delivery.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport has announced a new agreement with Djibouti to construct river and dry ports across South Sudan. The deal, signed in Juba on Monday, will see ports established in Yei, Renk, Nasir, Adok, Bor, Juba and Shambe.
The Minister of Transport, Dr Lam Akol Ajawin, described the agreement as a milestone in regional cooperation and said it would boost South Sudan’s role as a logistics hub in the Great Lakes region.
“These projects, once implemented, will expand trade opportunities, improve logistics and contribute to economic growth. They will also enable free movement of people, goods and services, enhancing South Sudan’s integration into regional markets,” Dr Ajawin said.
The construction of new ports is expected to ease the movement of imports and exports, particularly agricultural produce and construction materials, which currently face high costs due to heavy dependence on overland transport routes. Improved water transport will also lower the cost of living in many towns.
