(LEER COUNTY) – South Sudan’s Civil Aviation Authority has inspected the newly completed Leer Airstrip in Unity State to assess its readiness for aviation operations, particularly humanitarian flights serving communities in the area.
The inspection was carried out following the completion of construction works at the airstrip, which is regarded as an important transport link for humanitarian agencies and local residents.
A team of aviation specialists appointed by the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority conducted the assessment to evaluate the airstrip’s infrastructure and determine whether it is ready to support air operations.
The delegation was led by the Director for Air Transport and Economic Regulation, Blassia Akongo. The mission was facilitated by the World Food Programme, a long standing partner of the aviation authority in supporting air transport activities across South Sudan.
According to the authority, Leer Airstrip plays a strategic role in humanitarian operations and helps improve access to remote communities where road transport can be difficult, particularly during the rainy season.
The inspection forms part of wider efforts by the aviation authority to ensure aviation facilities across the country meet operational requirements and safety standards.
The authority said it remains committed to providing safe, secure and efficient air transport services for citizens, humanitarian organisations and visitors throughout South Sudan.
In a related development, officials in Juba reviewed progress on the renovation of Terminal 3 at Juba International Airport as part of efforts to improve the country’s main aviation gateway.
Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony and Juba City Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani conducted an oversight visit to inspect ongoing renovation works at Terminal 3 of Juba International Airport.
The visit focused on assessing progress on infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing passenger services and strengthening airport operations.
Officials from the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority briefed the visitors on the status of the project before leading a tour of key sections of the terminal.
The delegation inspected passenger lounges, arrival and departure areas, security screening points and administrative offices that are undergoing renovation.
The governor also met aviation personnel, engineers and contractors working on the project and reviewed the pace of construction.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority, the renovation is part of broader efforts to modernise airport infrastructure, improve passenger comfort and strengthen safety standards at South Sudan’s busiest airport.
The authority said the improvements are intended to support growing demand for air transport services while bringing airport facilities closer to international operating standards.
Director General Dr Ayiei Garang thanked state authorities for their support for aviation infrastructure projects and efforts to improve air transport services across the country.
