(JUBA) – South Sudan’s telecommunications regulator has approved a phased adjustment to the telecommunications tariff exchange rate, with mobile operators saying the move is intended to protect the sustainability of network services and maintain connectivity across the country.
The adjustment took effect at midnight on 26 June 2026 following consultations involving government institutions, mobile network operators, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, according to a joint statement issued by Digitel South Sudan, MTN South Sudan and Zain South Sudan.
The operators said the decision follows growing financial pressures on the telecommunications sector, including higher energy costs, inflation, depreciation of the South Sudanese Pound, limited access to foreign currency for network maintenance and equipment upgrades, and the need for continued investment in modern telecommunications technology.
According to the statement, the measure is being introduced in phases to allow a gradual transition while reducing the impact on consumers.
The companies stressed that the decision is a tariff exchange rate adjustment rather than a direct increase in telecommunications tariffs. They said existing service tariffs remain unchanged, while the exchange rate used to calculate those tariffs has been revised to reflect current economic conditions.
The operators said the adjustment is intended to support the continued provision of telecommunications services and help maintain reliable connectivity across South Sudan.
The National Communications Authority directed operators to absorb a significant share of inflation related costs, the statement said. As a result, the approved adjustment was limited to what regulators considered necessary to support the sector’s continued operation.
The three companies said they remain committed to maintaining service quality, improving network reliability and expanding digital inclusion through continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure.
They also pledged to continue providing customers with timely and transparent information regarding changes affecting telecommunications services.
The joint statement was issued by Digitel South Sudan, MTN South Sudan and Zain South Sudan, with copies shared with the National Communications Authority and the Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services.
The announcement comes as businesses across South Sudan continue to face rising operating costs linked to inflation, currency pressures and higher import expenses, factors that are affecting several sectors of the economy.
