(NIMULE, EASTERN EQUATORIA) – Construction of a long delayed One Stop Border Post at the Nimule-Elegu crossing is set to speed up after talks between municipal authorities, the European Union, UNOPS and Trade Mark Africa.
The parties met on 23 June 2026 to review progress on the €10 million EU funded project, which aims to replace the current fragmented border clearance system with a single facility housing customs, immigration and other agencies from both South Sudan and Uganda under one roof.
Once complete, the post is expected to cut clearance times, lower costs for traders and reduce informal trade. The Nimule OSBP forms part of EU backing for the Northern Corridor trade route linking South Sudan to Kenya and Uganda.
Planning for the post began more than ten years ago but construction has faced repeated setbacks.
Nimule Minicipality Mayor Caesar Longa Fuli told the visiting delegation that implementation was overdue and urged contractors to commit to a faster delivery timeline. He said an efficient border post is vital for trade, security and regional integration.
Mohamed Hajji Ibrahim, Monitoring and Evaluation Lead Expert at the European Union Cooperation Facility South Sudan, said the visit was aimed at assessing progress, identifying challenges and finding ways to speed up delivery.
The Nimule-Elegu crossing remains one of the busiest entry points into South Sudan. When operational, the OSBP will become a major trade gateway for the country.
