(MUGWO PAYAM, YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Traders and residents in several bomas of Mugwo Payam are appealing to county and state authorities to restore lasting peace and stability to enable them focus on agriculture and socio-economic recovery.
Speaking at Ginyani Market, local trader Charles Likambu emphasized that peace and security are essential for reconciliation, recovery and grassroots development.
“For us village farmers and traders, we want peace and stability in the Payam because if there is peace, we can rear goats, concentrate on food production and this can help us fight food insecurity and promote local development,” he said.
Likambu described the presence of armed cattle herders as a major concern for rural dwellers. He urged local authorities to maintain close engagement with communities to rebuild trust and strengthen cooperation.
Residents welcomed a recent visit by the Commissioner of Yei River County, Emmanuel Taban, describing it as a positive step toward restoring confidence between citizens and local leadership.
“We appreciated the commissioner for visiting us here in the market. That is what we want from our leaders, stronger connection through peace and service delivery,” Likambu added.
Kiden Modi, a resident of Longamere Boma, said women are eager for improved security to allow them to focus on farming and small businesses.
“There are many people coming to buy goods at Ginyani Market, and we want this good spirit to continue through peace and stability so that more women can do business and farm enough food for their families,” she said.
She also called on authorities to prioritize protection of citizens and property and to introduce small loans for women through village savings and cooperative groups.
Grace Tabu, who traveled from Yei town to the market, expressed happiness at the full resumption of trading activities.
“There are many organic food products here like raw cassava, yams, fresh maize, vegetables, and fruits. What we want in Yei River County is peace and stability so that we can move freely without fear,” she said.
While in Mugwo Payam last week, Commissioner Emmanuel Taban met with community leaders and local stakeholders, reaffirming the county government’s commitment to promoting peace, reconciliation, and law and order across the county.
Residents say sustained peace will enable them to rebuild livelihoods, strengthen food production, and accelerate local development efforts throughout Mugwo Payam and beyond.
