(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Some residents of Ginjani village in Mugwo Payam have called on the county and state governments to make peace and stability a top priority in the area, saying that calm is essential for farming, trade and safe movement.
Local farmer Charles Malish said many villagers and farmers in the community are longing for peace so they can work their land without fear. He explained that with the relative calm that has returned, people have started to bring local produce to sell at the open market in Ginjani.
“What we want now is peace and stability so that we can produce enough food and raise animals and bring our goods to the market for sale.”
Another local trader, Alex Modi, also encouraged the government to focus more on peace and reconciliation at the local level. He said without peace it is difficult for farmers and traders to move freely and bring their produce to the market in Ginjani.
“Peace is important. Without peace, we cannot bring our farm produce for sale here at Ginjani market. We want the government to promote peace and reconciliation in Mugwo Payam.@
He added that many villagers still fear travelling long distances, including trips to Yei town, because of ongoing insecurity in some areas. However, he noted that several families have returned to the village and the weekly Ginjani market has been reopened.
A buyer at the market, Susan Khamisa, said she was happy to see the market fully operating again. She said she travelled from Yei town to buy local farm produce and stressed that peace is essential for trade and economic development in the area.
“We came from Yei town to buy local farm produce in this market and our message is that peace is very important for trade and economic development here.”
Speaking to a crowd after his re-appointment as the state governor this week, Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony said his administration has made peace and stability a priority in all six counties of the state, including Yei River County.
