(Wau) – The 15th Chinese peacekeeping engineer contingent deployed in South Sudan has donated essential learning materials, sports gear, and daily-use items to a local girls’ primary school in Wau, located in the northwest part of the country. The donation took place on Friday and marked another humanitarian gesture by the Chinese contingent serving under the United Nations mission.
The school which sits close to the peacekeepers’ base has been struggling with a severe shortage of basic supplies due to years of instability in the region. To address this, the peacekeepers worked with local authorities to collect and deliver more than 1,000 items. These included school bags, footballs, basketballs, colored markers, and other classroom and recreational materials.
The donated items are intended to improve both the learning and leisure environment for the school’s students, most of whom have had limited access to educational resources.
One of the teachers, Peter, expressed gratitude during the event, saying, “So I would like to say thank, thank, thank to them for all the things that they are doing for us. They are supporting us here in school for not only Wau here, [but also] all over South Sudan.”
As part of the visit, the Chinese contingent also introduced the students to elements of Chinese culture. The children were given an opportunity to try writing Chinese characters and participated in interactive sessions led by the peacekeepers. The contingent also hosted musical performances, including guitar shows, which entertained both teachers and pupils.
Huang Tao, a member of the peacekeeping unit, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “This humanitarian assistance initiative has not only provided tangible support to the school, but also planted seeds of friendship in the children’s hearts, allowing them to experience the charm of different countries and cultures. Through this event, we have not only deepened mutual understanding and trust, but have also contributed our share to promoting world peace and development,” he said.
The donation, though not priced publicly, would likely amount to hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese Pounds (SSP).
China has been a regular contributor to UN peacekeeping missions in Africa and continues to support humanitarian causes in host countries like South Sudan.
