(YEI RIVER COUNTY) — A Community based rights advocacy group, Agency for Disability Inclusion says, despite increasing awareness of disability rights in Yei County, persons with disabilities continue to face significant challenges in accessing essential services such as education, healthcare, employment and public facilities in the county.
Speaking during the Access Radio Breakfast Show on Tuesday, officials from rights agency highlighted ongoing social and structural barriers that hinder full participation of persons with disabilities in society.
Alex Sebit, one of the speakers, expressed concern over the persistent stigma faced by individuals living with disabilities. He noted that many are often wrongly perceived as beggars, a label he strongly rejected.
“We as people with disabilities are not individuals who go to the streets to beg. What we need from communities is support and respect. We should not be labeled as ‘beggars,’” Sebit said.Another representative, Asiki Moses, also addressed the issue of negative and misleading language used against persons with disabilities. He urged communities to change their attitudes and recognize that disability does not equate to inability.
“There are names society uses to describe us, such as ‘disabled,’ implying that we cannot do anything. This is not true. We have abilities and potential. With the right support and removal of barriers, we can contribute and participate like anyone else in society,” Moses emphasized. The advocacy group, further pointed out that one of the major challenges remains the lack of accessible infrastructure in schools, health facilities, and public institutions. As a result, many children with disabilities are unable to attend school because learning environments are not adapted to meet their needs. They also underscored the importance of implementing inclusive policies and ensuring that persons with disabilities are actively involved in decision-making processes that affect their lives. The organization says, it continues to work closely with local authorities, community leaders and humanitarian organizations to promote inclusive programs and advocate for equal access to services. The organization also conducts awareness campaigns aimed at reducing stigma and encouraging communities to embrace and support persons with disabilities.
