(TONJ) – United Nations peacekeepers from Bangladesh have continued patrols in South Sudan’s Tonj area, pushing through extremely difficult terrain caused by heavy rains to reach the violence hit community of Romich.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said its teams were working hard to provide a protective presence in the area amid ongoing deadly intercommunal clashes.
Recent fighting in Tonj, located in Warrap State, has raised concern among humanitarian agencies and security actors. The region has witnessed a series of violent confrontations between armed youth from rival communities, resulting in deaths, injuries, and displacement.
Despite roads becoming nearly impassable due to seasonal rains, UNMISS patrols have made it a priority to reach Romich, one of the worst affected areas.
Peacekeepers are aiming to deter further violence by maintaining a visible and neutral presence in these high risk zones.
Photos and reports from the UN mission have shown troops travelling through flooded roads and deep mud to access remote parts of Tonj and revealed the difficulties in delivering peacekeeping and humanitarian support during the rainy season.
