(JUBA) – South Sudan has taken a major step toward reforming its legal framework by convening the first steering committee meeting on the Family Law Bill. The meeting was held in Juba and brought together officials and stakeholders to finalise provisions of the proposed legislation.
The draft Family Law Bill is designed to harmonise existing laws on marriage and family matters. It seeks to formally recognise different types of unions across the country’s diverse communities and ensure that rights and responsibilities of spouses are clearly defined.
Proposed provisions of the bill include clearer guidelines on marriage, separation and divorce. It also addresses matters of child custody, personal identity and the fair distribution of matrimonial property.
Officials and participants at the meeting welcomed the process as an important milestone in building a more inclusive and equitable legal system for South Sudanese families. They emphasised that the law would help to reflect social realities and provide much needed legal clarity in cases of family disputes.
The steering committee is expected to continue consultations in the coming weeks. Technical reviews will also be conducted before the bill is presented to parliament for debate and possible adoption.
According to the South Sudanese Women Intellectuals Forum in a statement on its online communication platforms, the initiative should be seen as part of wider efforts to strengthen the rule of law and ensure that legal reforms support social stability and fairness in local communities across South Sudan.
