(JUBA) – The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has strongly welcomed recent calls from a senior United States official for renewed dialogue among the key signatories of South Sudan’s 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
In a statement posted on Friday, Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the leading national civil society organization, praised remarks made by U.S. official Nicholas G. Checker, who urged South Sudan’s leaders to restart peace talks among the original signatories of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
Yakani noted that Checker’s visit to Juba, occurring just after the UNMISS mandate renewal, carries significant weight and presents a crucial opportunity to steer the country toward stability.
“This appeal, if taken seriously, could steer the country in a more positive direction,” Yakani stated, calling on the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) to commit to the full and unconditional implementation of the peace deal.
Highlighting the impact of civil society advocacy in fostering stability, Yakani expressed pride in efforts to steer the nation away from violence.
However, the CEPO Director issued a stern warning to parliament regarding the integrity of the peace deal. Yakani cautioned against altering the R-ARCSS without following proper procedures through the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC).
He emphasized that Checker’s message highlights strong international backing for adhering to the agreed-upon peace framework.
The call for dialogue comes at a critical time as South Sudan seeks to navigate its transitional period towards elections.
