(LAINYA COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Lainya County has called on citizens to take an active role in South Sudan’s constitution making process, describing public participation as essential for peace, stability and shared progress.
Hon Robert Lasu John Morris themade the call on 14 December 2025 while addressing a one day workshop on the progress of constitution making, organised by the Constitution Making Commission in Lainya County. The event brought together residents from across the county to discuss how citizens can contribute to shaping the country’s basic law.
Speaking to participants, the Commissioner said that the success of the constitution depends on the involvement of ordinary people. He stressed that the process should reflect the wishes and needs of communities, including those at county level, if South Sudan is to build a strong and united future.
He encouraged participants to speak openly and to take responsibility for the process, saying that the constitution belongs to the people rather than to institutions alone. According to him, sharing views freely helps ensure that the final document represents all sections of society.
The workshop focused on raising awareness among the civic population of Lainya County about the steps involved in constitution making and the role citizens play at each stage. Organisers said the aim was to ensure that communities understand how their opinions can influence national decisions.
Participants included local government officials, traditional leaders, youth representatives, women’s groups, organised forces and members of civil society organisations. Their presence reflected an effort to include a wide range of voices from the county.
The Constitution Making Commission said such county level engagements are important for building trust in the national process, especially in a country like South Sudan where public participation is seen as a foundation for lasting peace.
Attendance at the workshop included the following groups:
| Category | Representation |
|---|---|
| County officials | Local administration leaders |
| Community leaders | Chiefs and elders |
| Youth | Youth group representatives |
| Women | Women’s associations |
| Organised forces | Security representatives |
| Civil society | Local organisations |
Local participants welcomed the engagement, noting that taking the process closer to communities helps people feel included in decisions that affect the future of South Sudan.
According to the County Press, the Lainya workshop forms part of wider efforts across the country to involve citizens in constitution making, as South Sudan continues to work towards a stable and inclusive political framework.
