Eastern Equatoria Reopens Assembly With Security Focus
(Torit) – The Eastern Equatoria State Assembly resumed its second session of the year on Monday, with lawmakers raising concerns over growing insecurity in the region, particularly in areas like Torit and Nimule and along major transport routes such as the Torit–Juba highway.
Speaker of the Assembly, Charles Udwar Ukech, called for urgent legislation to address what he described as a surge in criminal activities by organized youth gangs. He urged both lawmakers and the state executive to prioritize the development and enforcement of new bylaws to counter the threat.
“I make a strong and urgent appeal to both honourable members of parliament and the executive to enact specific bylaws aimed at combatting the nigars groups,” Ukech stated. “This issue must be addressed with the urgency and seriousness it deserves. The protection of our community and the future of youth depend on the action we take now.”
Ukech characterized these gangs as “lawless and dangerous criminal networks” that are putting the safety and security of citizens at risk. His remarks reflected the deepening concern among local leaders over the impact of insecurity on daily life and regional development efforts.
Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore supported the Assembly Speaker’s appeal. He cited recent incidents of cattle theft, revenge killings, and rising gang violence, particularly in the border town of Nimule and in Torit. The governor also highlighted a spike in highway robberies, especially along the critical Torit–Juba corridor, which is essential for trade and mobility.
“I call on the youth of Eastern Equatoria State to be vigilant and not to tolerate criminals moving in our territories, destabilising our peace as our communities embark on food production,” Governor Lobong said.
The Assembly reconvened after several months of recess, returning with a packed legislative agenda. In addition to addressing community safety, lawmakers plan to focus on enhancing local governance structures, responding to the effects of climate change, and finding solutions to promote sustainable economic growth in the region.
