(JUBA) – South Sudan’s Minister of Environment, Garang Mabior, represented the country at the opening session of the seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi, Kenya. The assembly, held under the theme “Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet,” brings together nations to discuss global environmental challenges and sustainable development.
During the session, Minister Mabior emphasised South Sudan’s commitment to responsible environmental management and the promotion of sustainable development. He highlighted the country’s willingness to share its experiences and contribute to global efforts in building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future.
South Sudan faces significant environmental challenges, including deforestation, land degradation, and the impact of climate change on agriculture and water resources. Minister Mabior noted that participation in UNEA provides an opportunity for South Sudan to learn from international best practices while also showcasing local initiatives that support sustainability.
Experts say South Sudan’s engagement at UNEA-7 could attract international support for environmental projects, including reforestation, renewable energy, and sustainable land use. This involvement also strengthens the country’s voice in regional and global discussions on climate adaptation and environmental protection.
The assembly brings together ministers, policymakers, scientists, and civil society representatives from around the world. Delegates discuss strategies to address pressing issues such as pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate resilience.
