Hygiene Support Helps Pupils Remain in School in Morobo County/Handout Photo
(MOROBO COUNTY) – Nearly four hundred pupils in Morobo County have received hygiene and dignity supplies through a local charity effort aimed at helping children stay in school despite ongoing hardship in the border area.
Morobo Development Association, a community group working with financial support from the National Christian Development Organisation, delivered the assistance to four schools.
The distribution reached one hundred pupils at Ombachi Keliko Primary School, ninety six pupils at Light of Christ Nursery and Primary School, one hundred and forty one pupils at St Charles Lwanga Primary School and sixty pupils at St Joseph Primary School.
The chairperson of Morobo Development Association, Denaya Cosmas Didas, said the support included twenty four cartons of sanitary pads for adolescent girls, twenty five boxes of washing soap for both boys and girls and two hundred bottles of body lotion for adolescent girls:
“We have identified during our community meetings that many girls and boys stay out of school because of lack of basic needs, especially girls. We have provided this support to help learners stay in school, improve personal hygiene and support their wellbeing, which can lead to better learning outcomes.”
One of the beneficiaries, Joice Kiden, expressed gratitude to Morobo Development Association and its partner for the assistance.:
“I am grateful for this support. Many girls in our schools miss lessons because of lack of sanitary pads, poor classrooms, insufficient textbooks, pens, blackboards, and few teachers. This support helps us continue learning.”
She also called on the government and development partners to provide more support:
“There is a need to renovate more classrooms, supply learning materials, and deploy trained teachers to Morobo County. This will help all pupils have a better chance at education.”
Morobo County borders Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and continues to face insecurity. Repeated incidents of violence have displaced families, destroyed property and contributed to serious human rights abuses. These pressures have disrupted schooling and increased the need for targeted support to keep children in class.
