(ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA) – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed serious concern over the worsening security situation in parts of South Sudan, citing reports of rising tensions and violence in Jonglei State that have forced many civilians to flee their homes.
In a statement issued from Addis Ababa on Tuesday, the Chairperson said he was alarmed by reports of inflammatory language and actions that could trigger further violence and put civilians at greater risk, including women and children. He said such actions go against the principles and commitments of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan.
Mr. Youssouf strongly condemned any calls for violence or acts targeting civilians and stressed that protecting civilians is a core responsibility of all parties involved in the conflict.
While noting that South Sudanese leaders have continued to publicly support the peace process, the Chairperson said the African Union remains concerned about ongoing violations of the permanent ceasefire and their impact on humanitarian conditions.
He called on all parties to show restraint, reduce tensions without delay and fully meet their obligations under the peace agreement. He said this includes respecting ceasefire arrangements, honouring agreed power sharing provisions and returning to inclusive and consensus based decision making.
The Chairperson also urged South Sudanese leaders and stakeholders to place the interests of the people above all other concerns and to settle remaining disputes through dialogue and peaceful means to allow the transitional period to be completed successfully.
The African Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the people and Government of South Sudan in efforts to achieve lasting peace, stability and national reconciliation. It said it will continue to work closely with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the United Nations and other international partners toward this goal.
