(JUBA) – The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) has concluded a three day field mission to Juba, South Sudan, aimed at assessing progress in the country’s political transition and supporting preparations for the December 2026 elections.
The delegation, made up of representatives from all 15 PSC member states (Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eswatini, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda) was led by Ambassador Dr Mohamed Khaled, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the AU and PSC Chair for August 2025.
During the visit from 10 to 12 August, the PSC held consultations with a wide range of stakeholders. These included the Chairpersons of the National Election Committee and the National Constitutional Review Committee, faith based organisations, civil society groups, think tanks and the media.
Meetings were also held with the Troika partners (the United States, United Kingdom and Norway) as well as the European Union, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
The delegation met with national cabinet members and the High Level National Transition Committee, and paid a courtesy call on President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
Discussions focused on the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, the timetable for elections in December 2026, and the steps needed to complete the transition period.
The PSC commended the commitment expressed by South Sudanese leadership to conclude the transition process. It urged full implementation of the remaining provisions of the peace agreement, emphasised the importance of a permanent ceasefire, and called for the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers.
Council members also reaffirmed their support for the organisation of free, fair and credible elections, and encouraged an inclusive high-level political dialogue among all parties to resolve outstanding political issues peacefully.
The mission was described as a demonstration of the African Union’s solidarity with the people of South Sudan and its continued commitment to supporting the country’s path to peace, stability and democratic governance.
