(MOROBO COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Morobo County, Hon. Charles Data Bullen, has handed over ten sewing machines to women beneficiaries at a ceremony held at the Women’s Centre in Morobo.
The sewing machines are part of start up support for women who completed a six month vocational training programme last year under the Support for Peace and Education Development Programme and its partner organisations. The handover fulfils a pledge made by the Commissioner during the graduation ceremony for the trainees in August last year.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Data said supporting women with tools is essential for economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods. He said skills training without start up equipment limits the benefits of such programmes and reduces income opportunities for graduates. He added that training should be matched with practical support so beneficiaries can earn a living.
The Commissioner also called on non governmental organisations to include start up materials in their project budgets so that trained women can use their skills and become self reliant over time.
The beneficiaries welcomed the support. Dawa Elizabeth, the group leader, said the assistance was the first support of its kind from county authorities since her return from refuge five years ago. She said the group would closely manage the use of the sewing machines to ensure they benefit all members.
