(Juba) – South Sudan’s women’s basketball team is set to make history by competing in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket for the first time, joining the continent’s top teams in the tournament scheduled for July 25 to August 3 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The team secured a wildcard entry from FIBA Africa, marking another milestone for the nation’s basketball journey. South Sudan joins Egypt and Mozambique as the latest teams to qualify for the prestigious continental competition.
South Sudan earned their spot after a strong performance in the qualifiers, where they defeated Kenya twice and narrowly beat Burundi. They finished third in the FIBA Africa Zone 5 qualifiers, behind winners Uganda and runners-up Egypt.
This achievement follows the remarkable success of South Sudan’s men’s national team, which made headlines by qualifying for the 2023 FIBA World Cup and earning a place in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The country, still recovering from years of civil war, has limited sports infrastructure, but its basketball teams continue to defy expectations.
Despite lacking modern training facilities, South Sudanese athletes are using basketball as a platform for national pride and transformation. The women’s team’s qualification is seen as a symbol of resilience and hope.
The official tournament draw will take place on April 23 in Abidjan, where South Sudan will learn their group-stage opponents.
