(JUBA) – The Governor of Central Equatoria State, Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, was on Friday briefed by the State Ministry of Animal Resources, Fisheries and Tourism on its current operations, recent achievements, ongoing challenges and long term strategies.
The meeting held in Juba was led by the State Minister of Animal Resources, Hon. Alex Lotiyu Elia. It served as a platform to bring the Governor up to date with the ministry’s framework and its approach to delivering key services across the sectors of animal resources, fisheries, and tourism.
Hon. Lotiyu highlighted some of the ministry’s top priorities, including a plan to upgrade slaughterhouses in Juba and other counties. This move is part of a wider strategy to improve public health and hygiene in meat handling and processing.
He also shared proposals for strengthening animal disease control mechanisms across the State. These would support livestock health, protect rural livelihoods and improve market access for animal products.
The Governor welcomed the update and praised the ministry for its structured approach. He noted that such briefings were vital in helping leadership stay informed and in ensuring that the ministry’s goals align with the broader development plans of the State Government. He encouraged the ministry to maintain momentum and continue working towards measurable improvements in the livestock, fisheries, and tourism sectors.
Although financial details were not disclosed, any infrastructural upgrades such as the modernisation of slaughterhouses and animal health campaigns are likely to require considerable investment.
A brief summary of the ministry’s priorities shared at the meeting:
| Priority Area | Description |
|---|---|
| Slaughterhouse Upgrade | Modern facilities in Juba and counties to ensure hygiene |
| Animal Disease Control | Strengthen surveillance and response systems |
| Fisheries Sector Support | Sustainable practices and infrastructure for local fishers |
| Tourism Potential | Identify and develop eco-tourism sites |
| Inter-Sector Coordination | Align ministry work with State Government’s broader goals |
The Ministry of Animal Resources, Fisheries and Tourism plays a vital role in Central Equatoria’s economic development, particularly in rural areas where livestock and fishing form a major part of people’s livelihoods.
Improving the sector’s infrastructure and policy frameworks is expected to boost productivity, attract investment and promote food security.
Mujung concluded the briefing by pledging continued support to the ministry and emphasised the need for interdepartmental cooperation to ensure that sectoral development contributes meaningfully to the welfare of citizens in Central Equatoria State and South Sudan as a whole.
