Juba Retail Boom Continues with Beijing Supermarket Launch
(JUBA) – The retail sector in South Sudan’s capital took another step forward on Friday, 15 August 2025, with the official opening of the Beijing Supermarket in Juba.
The launch was led by National Minister of Trade and Industry Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, who reflected on both the country’s expanding consumer market and the deepening economic ties between South Sudan and China.
For many residents, the new supermarket represents more than just another place to shop. It brings a wider range of products under one roof, more competitive pricing and job opportunities for local workers.
In her remarks, Minister Manyang thanked Beijing Hotel, the company behind the supermarket, for its continued investment in South Sudan. She praised China’s long standing role in supporting infrastructure, oil production, healthcare services and educational scholarships in the country.
She described the supermarket as strategically located to serve Juba’s growing population, and as an example of how private investment can help diversify South Sudan’s economy beyond oil.
Manyang also invited more international and local investors to explore opportunities in South Sudan, assuring them of the government’s support.
She further urged Chinese owned businesses to integrate South Sudanese products into their supply chains, saying this would give a boost to domestic agriculture and manufacturing.
The ceremony was attended by senior ministry officials, including the Director General of Domestic Trade and the Director General of Bilateral Trade.
Foreign backed supermarkets could pave the way for improvements in logistics, supply chains and quality control standards, factors that are crucial for the city to compete with established retail centres in Kampala and Nairobi.
