(TORIT) – A total of 36 young people formerly linked to a local gang have been reintegrated into schools in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, as part of a municipal drive to reduce crime through education and rehabilitation.
The youths were previously associated with a gang known as “Niggas” in the town.
Mayor Eddy William Ponsiano announced the initiative in an interview with local media. He described it as part of the municipality’s broader strategy to address youth related crime by prioritising education, counselling and community engagement.
According to the mayor, the youths voluntarily left the gang following sustained engagement with municipal authorities. The authorities encouraged them to return to school and pursue a better future.
“This is not just about taking young people away from crime. It is about restoring hope, creating opportunities and helping them become responsible citizens who can contribute positively to society,” Ponsiano said.
The mayor said youth unemployment, school dropout and limited opportunities are among the factors that can increase young people’s vulnerability to criminal activities.
He called on parents, community leaders, teachers, religious leaders and development partners to work together to support at risk youth before they become involved in gangs and violence.
Residents have welcomed the initiative. They described it as a positive step toward improving public safety and investing in the future of Torit’s young people. Many said expanding access to education and mentorship could help strengthen community cohesion and contribute to lasting peace.
The municipality said it remains committed to implementing similar programmes focused on education, skills development and youth empowerment.
