(TEREKEKA COUNTY) – The South Sudan Doctors Union has announced plans to conduct a five day free surgical outreach in Terekeka County, Central Equatoria State, from 23rd to 28th January 2026. The initiative aims to provide life saving operations, general medical care and health education to local communities.
Officials from the union said the outreach responds to persistent shortages in medical services and recent reductions in health facility support across the county.
Dr Luka Dut, the union’s secretary general, emphasised that the programme seeks to increase healthcare access for residents, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
“The aim of this medical and surgical outreach is to increase access to the people of Central Equatoria,” Dr Dut said. He explained that the outreach will cover general medical consultations, surgical procedures, and community health education.
The plans were discussed during a meeting with Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony in Juba. Dr Dut said the governor expressed full support for the initiative and committed to backing broader health sector priorities. Discussions also included potential financial support for state health workers undertaking specialist training abroad.
Derick Derickson, the governor’s press secretary, confirmed that the state leadership had pledged both moral and financial support for the surgical camp.
“The governor pledges full support to make sure that this initiative is realised,” Derickson said, noting that the state government commended the Doctors Union for its efforts and highlighted the importance of expanding healthcare services in rural and hard to reach areas.
A statement from the Doctors’ Union said outreach reflects a growing emphasis on improving medical access in Central Equatoria, where many communities have faced challenges due to underfunded health facilities and limited local services.
The Office of the Governor said the meeting demonstrates cooperation between state authorities and professional health bodies to respond to urgent medical needs in Central Equatoria State.
