Mugwo Community Calls for National Intervention/Handout
(YEI) – The Mugwo Community Stakeholders’ Forum (MCS’F) in Mugwo Payam, Yei River County, has strongly condemned the abduction of Paramount Chief Joseph Brown Lo-Mose and two humanitarian aid workers by armed individuals. The incident occurred during a peace and reconciliation mission.
In a public statement issued on 8 July 2025, the MCS’F described the abduction as a deeply inhumane and unacceptable act that disrespects the dignity of those taken and the cultural values and norms of the people of Yei River County. The forum said the kidnap was a major setback to efforts aimed at rebuilding peace in the region.
The three individuals, including the paramount chief, were engaged in community outreach when they were taken by force. Their mission was to promote peace and unity among the communities still healing from the trauma of South Sudan’s previous civil conflicts in 2013 and 2016.
Community representatives have called for the immediate and unconditional release of all three captives.
“Their continued captivity serves no purpose and only reopens wounds in a society striving to move forward,” the statement read.
The forum urged the County, State, and National governments along with all security agencies to act swiftly to secure the safe return of the chief and aid workers.
It also called for the perpetrators to be apprehended and held accountable, noting that ensuring the safety of community leaders and humanitarian workers is essential to sustaining peace and building trust.
Hon. Malish Noel Scopas, who signed the statement on behalf of the MCS’F, appealed to traditional spirits to protect the abducted, saying, “May the Ngun Kata of Yei watch over you and bring you home safely.”
The message concluded with recognition of the commitment and service shown by Chief Lo-Mose and the two aid workers to the people of Yei River County and South Sudan at large. Their contributions were described as vital and deeply appreciated by the community.
No financial demands or ransom figures have been made public. As of the time of reporting, local authorities had not issued further statements on the progress of recovery or investigation.
