(JUBA) – The Ministry of Health and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at improving healthcare services across South Sudan.
The agreement, signed on Thursday in Juba, is expected to strengthen collaboration in tackling challenges that limit access to essential medical care.
The partnership will pave the way for operational cooperation, with specific project protocols to follow. Officials say it marks a significant step in building capacity and delivering health projects more effectively, especially in underserved areas.
Speaking at the signing, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health Hon. Dr Aninn Ngot Ngot Mou reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting UNOPS-led initiatives in the health sector.
“The Ministry of Health is dedicated to providing UNOPS with all necessary support for implementing its health related activities across the country,” he said.
Dr Aninn expressed appreciation for UNOPS’ contributions, noting that the partnership would directly benefit the people of South Sudan.
UNOPS Country Manager Mrs Petronella Halwiindi said the agreement would enable closer cooperation in identifying priority areas for health service improvement.
“This MoU opens the door even wider for us to collaborate more closely in identifying areas where the Ministry of Health sees potential for UNOPS to enhance services for the people of South Sudan. We are ready to come to the table and work together to address these challenges,” she said.
UNOPS, which serves as the operational arm of the United Nations, will provide technical expertise in infrastructure, project management and procurement to support the Ministry’s healthcare delivery plans.
Officials say these services will be crucial in expanding access to medical care, improving hospital facilities and ensuring timely supply of essential medicines and equipment.
In South Sudan, the high cost of medical supplies and limited infrastructure remain significant barriers to healthcare access.
Officials hope that with UNOPS support, investment in the health sector will become more efficient, ensuring that resources reach the facilities and communities most in need.
The Ministry of Health said the collaboration was in line with its strategic vision to build a stronger health system, reduce inequalities in access to care, and promote long term public health improvements.
