
Sapana Abui, Media Authority Director General, Passes Away / Handout Photo
(YAMBIO) – Former Western Equatoria State Deputy Governor Sapana Abui has died at a hospital in Juba, his family has confirmed. He passed away late Saturday night on 4 July 2026 after a period of illness.
Abui’s brother, Reverend Repent Abraham Dominic, said the former deputy governor died while receiving medical care. Speaker of the Transitional Western Equatoria State Legislative Assembly, Anna Tunna Richard, later disclosed that Abui had undergone head surgery before his death.
At the time of his passing, Abui served as Director General for Information and Compliance at the Media Authority. His death cuts short a career of public service that spanned state and national government.
The current Deputy Governor of Western Equatoria State, Justin J. Marona, paid tribute on behalf of himself and the people of the state. He said Abui was among the sons of Western Equatoria who served with dedication, and his contribution would be remembered.
Speaker Anna Tunna Richard described the death as a great loss to South Sudan, Western Equatoria State and Greater Mundri in particular. She said Abui served with integrity, dignity and dedication to good governance throughout his career.
The Speaker noted that during his time as deputy governor, Abui worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people. She also commended his work at the Media Authority, where he championed professionalism, accountability and ethical standards in the media sector. She described him as a great leader, father, mentor and patriot whose legacy of selfless service would inspire future generations.
Emmanuel M. Tino, who worked as the first Director General under Abui at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment in 2011, recalled a kind, God fearing, humble and hardworking leader. Tino said they worked together to establish administrative systems, develop human resource structures and formulate investment policies for Western Equatoria State. He said Abui demonstrated exceptional professionalism, visionary leadership and remarkable resourcefulness.
Nhial Tutdoh also expressed sadness at the loss. He said Abui served the media fraternity wholeheartedly and was committed to promoting professionalism in the field. His death, Tutdoh said, was a great loss to the sector and the country.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
