(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has sworn in several newly appointed senior government officials at a ceremony held at the State House in Juba, urging them to work together to stabilise the economy and improve services for the people of South Sudan.
Among those sworn in were Adut Salva Kiir Mayardit as the Presidential Envoy on Special Programmes, Athian Diing Athian as the Minister of Finance and Planning and Joseph Mum Majak as the Minister of Investment.
In his speech, President Kiir called for unity, discipline and transparency across the government. He told the new appointees that teamwork and collaboration were essential if the government was to meet the high expectations of citizens, many of whom continue to face economic hardship.
Addressing the new Minister of Finance directly, President Kiir underlined the urgency of stabilising the national economy. He said financial discipline and transparency must guide the work of the ministry to restore public confidence and win back trust from international partners.
He added that the proper management of resources would determine whether South Sudan could overcome its current challenges.
To the Minister of Investment, the President gave clear instructions to attract both domestic and foreign investment and to ensure that such investment brings tangible development benefits to communities across the country. He stressed that investment policies should not remain on paper but must be translated into real opportunities for the people.
For the newly appointed Presidential Envoy, the President said the role would be critical in strengthening coordination on special programmes designed to respond to pressing national priorities.
Citizens have repeatedly expressed frustration with poor services and rising prices, while donors have called for greater accountability in government operations.
South Sudan continues to grapple with severe economic difficulties, including high inflation and a weak currency.
At the official exchange rate in August 2025, one US dollar is equal to 4,600 South Sudanese pounds (SSP).
