Military Delegation Reviews Nyainga-Muda Incident/Ebenezer FM
(KAJO-KEJI COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Kajo-Keji County, Hon. Wani Jackson Mule, has formally briefed a high level fact finding mission from the Great Lakes Region on the recent Ugandan military incursion into South Sudanese territory at Nyainga-Muda village in Bori Boma.
The incident took place on 28 July 2025 and displaced more than 2,900 households in the area. The committee, composed of senior military officials from across the Great Lakes Region, arrived in Kajo-Keji County this week to investigate the matter and engage with communities on both sides of the border.
Their stated goal is to find an amicable solution to the ongoing tensions between residents of Kajo-Keji and neighbouring Yumbe and Moyo districts in Uganda.
The visiting team toured the disputed locations to assess the situation directly. They also met local leaders, security forces and community representatives. Commissioner Mule stressed that the border dispute is not new, noting that Ugandan encroachment into Kajo-Keji territory has been ongoing for decades.
He recalled that following Uganda’s independence in 1962, its government later produced a new constitution and national map in 1967. According to Mule, the map expanded Ugandan territory into parts of South Sudan, disregarding colonial-era British maps which had defined the international boundary. He listed several historical incidents of encroachment that, he said, have strained relations between communities living along the border.
Mule called for urgent and clear demarcation of the South Sudan-Uganda border to prevent further escalation. He urged the Great Lakes fact finding mission to carefully study available evidence and recommend a permanent settlement. He also thanked the delegation for treating the attack on South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) by Ugandan forces as a matter of urgency.
The team began its mission last week in Kampala, where they met Uganda’s military command. They later travelled to Juba for discussions with South Sudan’s military leadership and the Governor of Central Equatoria State. On Saturday, the committee held talks in Uganda’s Yumbe District before visiting disputed areas including Gbari, Afoji and Abaya.
Before reaching Kajo-Keji, the delegation also met officials in Moyo District, which borders South Sudan. According to the team leader, both military and diplomatic initiatives are underway to address the dispute, but the committee’s task is to accelerate the process towards a final resolution. A formal report is expected to be submitted to regional authorities at the conclusion of the mission.
