The launch of online broadcasting is part of a growing shift among South Sudan’s media houses to use the internet to reach wider audiences and make information more available to the public.
(YEI COUNTY) – Access Radio 88.8 FM has started broadcasting all its programmes online, a move aimed at reaching more listeners in South Sudan and across the world. The launch took place on Friday 7 November 2025 through the station’s new website www.radioyei.org.
The station manager Johnson Poru Hillary said the new digital platform will help expand coverage and make information more accessible to people in both urban and rural areas.
“This is a big step for the people of Greater Yei, including Lainya, Morobo and Kajo-Keji counties. It also connects South Sudanese people in other parts of the country and abroad,” he said.
Johnson explained that going digital will help young people understand how technology can improve learning, communication and decision making.
“With this online platform, we can now promote peace, awareness on gender based violence, human rights, good governance, education, agriculture, business, health and care for the environment,” he said.
He encouraged listeners, especially those in villages and the diaspora, to follow live programmes through the website and the radio’s social media pages.
“We want everyone, whether in South Sudan or outside, to stay informed and connected with home,” he said.
The launch has received positive feedback from listeners. David Taban, who follows Access Radio from Rhino Refugee Camp in Uganda, said the new platform helps him feel closer to home.
“I am very happy to listen online. We can now follow peace and development news from Yei, Lainya, Morobo and Kajo-Keji,” he said.
Another listener, Alikaya Modi, shared her excitement from Juba.
“I am listening live from my smartphone. I am proud of Access Radio for using technology to reach us,” she said.
Access Radio is a community station based in Yei County, Central Equatoria State. It broadcasts educational, agricultura and peace programmes that focus on local development, women and youth empowerment, health and governance. The station is now the first community radio in the Greater Yei region to stream live online.
The digital expansion is expected to improve communication between South Sudanese communities at home and abroad, while giving a new voice to local issues. It may also attract new opportunities for partnerships, training and online advertising.
