(JUBA) – South Sudan’s business community has raised concerns over taxation, foreign exchange instability, customs delays, electricity shortages and the spread of counterfeit goods during consultations with the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Juba.
The issues were discussed on 25 May during a meeting between the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the National Chamber of Commerce, international business partners, local traders and other private sector representatives.
The consultations brought together importers, exporters, manufacturers, investors and members of the wider business community to review challenges affecting trade and industrial development across the country.
Participants identified several key obstacles facing businesses, including high taxes and multiple levies imposed on traders and companies, unstable foreign exchange rates, delays at border crossing points and customs clearance procedures, unreliable electricity supply and the entry of counterfeit and substandard products into local markets.
Representatives of the business community submitted a written document outlining their concerns and recommendations to the ministry.
Speaking during the meeting, Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Labanya Margret Mathya said the government remains committed to improving the business environment and strengthening cooperation with the private sector.
She said the ministry would work closely with relevant institutions to address the concerns raised and support improvements in the country’s trade and investment climate.
According to a Trade Ministry press release, the meeting forms part of ongoing engagement between the government and private sector stakeholders aimed at supporting economic growth, increasing investment and improving conditions for businesses operating in South Sudan.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry said continued dialogue with traders, investors and business organisations remains important in identifying challenges and developing practical solutions for the country’s trade and industrial sectors.Discover more from Access Radio Yei News
