State and National Leaders Address Market Prices in Central Equatoria
(JUBA) – South Sudan’s national and state authorities are considering tax reductions on essential commodities, including food and fuel, as rising market prices continue to increase pressure on households across the country.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting in Juba on 21 May between the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Deputy Governor of Central Equatoria State, Paulino Lukudu Obede, the Mayor of Juba City Council and their delegation.
The talks focused on measures to reduce the cost of essential goods amid soaring market prices, delayed payment of civil servant salaries, instability in foreign exchange markets and supply chain disruptions affecting the availability and cost of commodities.
Officials said reducing taxes on key goods could help lower prices and improve affordability for consumers. Participants also discussed the need for stronger market oversight to support efforts aimed at stabilising prices.
Central Equatoria State authorities said they were increasingly concerned by the continued rise in commodity prices, warning that growing economic pressures could affect livelihoods and create wider challenges for communities and local markets.
The state government said part of the inflation problem was linked to weaknesses in tax administration, which have contributed to higher costs being passed on to consumers.
During the meeting, state officials pledged to continue working with the national government and the Ministry of Trade and Industry to address economic difficulties affecting businesses and households.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry said the concerns raised would be presented to the National Council of Ministers and the Economic Cluster for further discussion and action.
Trade Minister Dr Labanya Margaret Mathya welcomed the engagement by Central Equatoria State authorities and said coordinated action would be needed to identify practical measures to reduce the cost of essential commodities and ease financial pressure on the public.
A press release by the State Secretariat stated the meeting forms part of ongoing efforts by national and state authorities to address inflation, improve market conditions and support economic stability in South Sudan.Discover more from Access Radio Yei News
