(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – South Sudan and Djibouti have signed an important agreement to build and improve river and dry ports, with Yei River County set to benefit from a brand new dry port.
The deal was signed on 18 August 2025 in Djibouti City by South Sudan’s Minister of Transport, Dr Lam Akol Ajawin, and Djibouti’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Moussa Ahmed Hassan.
The new dry port in Yei will serve as a centre for goods coming in and going out of the country. According to officials sources, the port will help farmers, traders, and transport companies move their products more easily and reduce costs as well as save time.
In addition to Yei, the agreement includes building and improving river ports in Malakal, Renk, Nasir, Adok, Shambe, Bor and Juba. These facilities are expected to connect South Sudan more closely with its neighbours and the wider African Great Lakes region.
The Ministry of Transport explained that Djibouti’s long experience in managing ports will be used to help South Sudan develop its own. Djibouti already serves as a trade route for many landlocked countries in East Africa, and this new cooperation is expected to bring knowledge and technical support to South Sudan.
For Yei River County, the dry port is seen as a chance to create jobs, improve local businesses and attract new investment. Farmers and traders in Yei and surrounding areas will be able to send their goods to other parts of the country and even across borders more easily.
According to the Ministry, the project will also make it easier for people to travel and for services and humanitarian supplies to reach communities faster.
