(MOROBO) – State police in Morobo County, Central Equatoria State, have opened an investigation into the killing of a 35 year old businessman.
The deceased, identified as John Bosco Jamba, popularly known by his nickname “Munu” was shot dead on Tuesday by unknown armed men in Kanja village, Gulumbi Payam.
According to Morobo County Police Inspector, Captain Peter Murye Moses, Jamba was travelling from Koboko to Morobo and Yei while transporting marungi, a local herbal stimulant, when he was ambushed.
“He was killed by unidentified gunmen in Kanja at around 1 PM,” said Captain Murye. “The body was taken to Yei and will be handed over to the family and relatives there.”
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Security forces have been dispatched to the scene to secure the area and launch investigations.
Relatives and friends of the victim condemned the killing and urged the government to bring those responsible to justice. One family member, speaking anonymously for fear of retaliation, called on authorities to improve safety measures on major transport routes.
“We want the government to increase security, stop the fighting and protect civilians and travellers along the Yei–Morobo–Kaya road,” the relative said.
Morobo County has witnessed a worrying rise in violence in recent months.
The area has been marked by attacks, killings, ambushes and kidnappings, particularly following renewed clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO).
The insecurity has deeply affected trade and civilian movement along the strategic highway linking Morobo, Yei and Kaya.
Businesspeople, including small traders like the late Jamba, who rely on this route for their livelihoods, now face increased risks.
No arrests had been made at the time of publishing.
