(YEI) – The Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Yei has appealed to citizens, religious figures and political leaders to embrace peace and forgiveness, as insecurity and political tensions continue to affect Yei River County and surrounding areas.
Bishop Levi Marandulu Yepete made the appeal during a recent address, where he urged local communities and leaders to prioritise reconciliation and healing. His message comes as the region experiences increasing security incidents, including road ambushes and abductions along key transport routes.
“In times like these, dialogue and forgiveness are vital for reconciliation and peaceful co-existence,” the bishop said. “I urge religious and community leaders to continue preaching peace so that we can live together in harmony.”
The bishop called on all members of the community to acknowledge their past mistakes, saying this is an essential step towards true forgiveness and societal healing.
“When we admit our faults, we create space for reconciliation. Let us be honest with ourselves and open the door to lasting peace,” he stated.
In addition to community level appeals, Bishop Marandulu directed a strong message to political leaders at county, state and national levels. He called for the full implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), with a particular focus on security provisions.
“Implement the security aspects of the peace agreement. A unified national force is essential to protect citizens, their property and the constitution,” he said.
He encouraged politicians to put aside personal differences and resolve conflicts through peaceful dialogue rather than violence.
“Solutions are not achieved through guns. Let us sit together, talk, and find peaceful ways to resolve our problems. The people’s interests must come first, before individual ambitions,” he added.
Bishop Marandulu said he believes lasting peace will pave the way for South Sudan’s economic development, a long-held dream since the country’s 21 year liberation struggle.
