(NIMULE) – The Catholic Diocese of Torit (CDOT) in Eastern Equatoria State has officially assumed ownership and administration of Fulla Senior Secondary School, ending more than two decades of direct government control since the school was founded in 1999.
The handover follows the terms of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2007, which set out a joint management structure between the church and the state. Under the agreement, CDOT will now appoint the head teacher while the government will appoint the deputy head teacher.
The Press Unit of Nimule Municipality say this arrangement is designed to ensure cooperation, stability and continuity as the school enters a new phase of leadership.
The official handover ceremony was attended by local and state authorities. Nimule Mayor Longa Fuli and Alfred Taban, the Acting Director General in the State Ministry of General Education and Instructions, took part in the event. Mr Taban formally handed over administrative responsibility to a CDOT representative in the presence of Brother Ivan and Father Martin Vuni.
In a related development, a suspension letter was issued to the school’s former head teacher, Tako Charles, during the ceremony. The reason for the suspension was not disclosed by officials.
The transition has brough focus to the continuing role of the Catholic Church in managing educational institutions in South Sudan. Church leaders say the arrangement will strengthen the values and standards of education in the state while working with the government to ensure that students receive consistent support.
