(JUBA) – The Governor of Central Equatoria State Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel joined national leaders, family members and mourners in Juba on Saturday to honour the life of the late Professor Benedict Sebit Lagu.
The memorial prayers were attended by Vice President Josephine Lagu, who is also Chair of the Service Cluster and elder sister to the late professor.
The event brought together senior government officials, including the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, who delivered a condolence message on behalf of President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
Dr. Lomuro described Professor Benedict’s passing as a loss to the country. He said the Lagu family has long been associated with service, modest leadership and a commitment to the nation.
He encouraged citizens to draw lessons from the late professor’s record of dedication, particularly in education and public service.
Governor Mujung spoke about the national importance of Professor Benedict’s contribution to education and technology in South Sudan.
He said the late academic used his knowledge to help build institutions and to support the development of skills among young people. He added that investing in education remains essential for unity, peace and progress.
The governor also praised the wider role of the Lagu family in the history of South Sudan. He noted that the family’s name is linked to the Anya Anya liberation struggle and has remained connected to efforts to secure freedom and dignity for the country.
Professor Benedict Sebit Lagu studied electrical engineering at Zagazig University in Egypt and later completed a Master’s degree in Computer Science at the New York Institute of Technology.
In 2011, he played a central role in the Referendum process as Data Centre Manager at the Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau.
He later served as a Director in the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and as Dean of the College of Computer Science at the University of Juba.
He passed away in Egypt on 30 September 2025 after an illness. Colleagues and students have described him as dedicated, respectful and determined to build local skills in technology.
The memorial gathering offered prayers for his family and acknowledged his contribution to national development.
