(YEI COUNTY) – Access to essential services remains a major challenge for persons with disabilities in Yei County despite growing awareness of disability rights, a community based advocacy group has said.
The Agency for Disability Inclusion says many residents with disabilities still struggle to access education, healthcare, employment opportunities and public facilities due to ongoing social and structural barriers.
The group raised the concerns during the Access Radio Breakfast Show on Tuesday, noting that awareness alone has not yet translated into practical inclusion on the ground.
Representatives from the organisation said stigma continues to affect how persons with disabilities are treated in the community. Alex Sebit said many individuals are still wrongly viewed as beggars, a perception he strongly rejected and described as harmful and misleading.
Another representative, Asiki Moses, also spoke about the continued use of negative language against persons with disabilities. He urged communities to change their attitudes and to understand that disability does not mean inability.
The advocacy group further noted that the lack of accessible infrastructure remains one of the biggest obstacles. Schools, health facilities and other public institutions are often not designed to accommodate persons with disabilities.
As a result, many children with disabilities are unable to attend school, as learning environments are not adapted to meet their needs. The group called for urgent improvements to infrastructure and stronger enforcement of inclusive policies to ensure equal access to basic services.
