(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Leaders and community representatives in Yei River County have opened a two day consultation aimed at building peace and reducing conflict in the area.
The talks facilitated by Reconcile International, began on Tuesday, 12 August 2025, bringing together County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme, religious leaders, civil society members, security officials, youth and women leaders, local chiefs and staff from the organising body.
Commissioner Taban welcomed the initiative, calling it an important step in addressing challenges facing the county and encouraging peaceful coexistence among communities. He praised Reconcile International for creating a platform for open discussion and problem-solving.
He highlighted the vital role played by religious leaders and civil society groups in fostering positive change, urging them to work closely with government authorities to find lasting solutions.
Taban also appealed to armed groups to respect civilians and ensure the safety of humanitarian personnel operating in the region.
Speaking at the opening session, Catholic Bishop Alex Lodiong Sakor of the Diocese of Yei made a national appeal, calling on political and armed actors across South Sudan to restore hope and unity.
He encouraged leaders to draw inspiration from the spirit that led to the country’s independence in 2011, reminding them that all citizens contributed to its achievement and deserve equal treatment regardless of region or background.

The consultations are expected to produce practical measures for reducing tensions, promoting dialogue and strengthening community unity both within Yei River County and in surrounding areas.
