(ABUJA) – South Sudan Speaker Highlights Parliament Progress at African Conference
Rt. Hon. Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), has attended the first African Legislative Aides Conference (ALAC) in Abuja, Nigeria. The conference, held in September 2025, focused on “Strengthening Legislative Support Systems for Effective Parliamentary Democracy.”
The event brought together parliamentary aides, lawmakers, and experts from across Africa. The goal was to discuss how parliaments can work better and how support staff can help them make good laws.
Speaker Nunu Kumba gave the keynote speech, sharing South Sudan’s experience in improving parliamentary services, research work and communication. She said strong parliaments need strong support teams behind the scenes.
“The work done behind the scenes is as important as the debates and decisions on the floor,” she said.
Delegates agreed that developing skills, sharing best practices, and working together across countries are key to stronger parliaments.
The conference also gave participants a chance to learn from other African countries about research, policy analysis, and administration in law-making.
At the end of the conference, the African Legislative Aides Association was officially formed. Its president is from Nigeria, the deputy from Libya and the secretary general from South Sudan. The association will help parliament staff across Africa share knowledge and work together.
Speaker Nunu Kumba thanked the hosts for their hospitality and for creating a space to learn and exchange ideas. She said she returned to South Sudan encouraged and ready to continue improving the country’s parliamentary work.
