(TOKYO) – Japan has welcomed home two of its military officers after completing service with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), where they worked in intelligence and engineering roles.
The ceremony was held on 10 September in Tokyo and hosted by the Cabinet Office and attended by Parliamentary Vice Minister of Defence Kobayashi. He praised the officers for their dedication and the recognition they received from UNMISS for their contributions. Kobayashi expressed his gratitude and said their work reflected Japan’s strong commitment to international peace and stability.
The two officers were part of the 16th contingent of Japanese Self Defence Forces (JSDF) staff deployed to UNMISS headquarters. Their duties focused on providing intelligence analysis and technical engineering expertise, both of which are considered vital for the mission’s daily operations.
South Sudan remains one of the UN’s most challenging peacekeeping environments. UNMISS was established in 2011 to support peace and security in the country, monitor human rights, and help deliver humanitarian aid. The mission is currently staffed by more than 17,000 uniformed personnel from different countries.
Japan’s involvement in UNMISS has often been highlighted as a symbol of its broader contribution to international peacekeeping. The Ministry of Defence said it would continue supporting peace and security in Africa by dispatching personnel and engaging in other cooperative efforts.
Japan’s engineering units, in particular, have played an important role in infrastructure development in South Sudan, including building roads that improve access to rural communities. Although the country is thousands of kilometres away from Tokyo, Japan has maintained a steady presence in South Sudan for more than a decade through the UN framework.
For South Sudan, the continued support of international partners remains critical as the country faces political instability, humanitarian needs and ongoing security challenges. Japan is one of several countries that provide technical and human resources to strengthen UNMISS operations, which are vital for maintaining peace in communities affected by conflict.
