(ABIDJAN) – Delicia Washington, the dynamic guard for South Sudan, has been crowned the top scorer of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, marking a historic achievement not just for herself but for the nation’s debuting women’s basketball team.
Washington led the tournament in scoring with an average of 21.6 points per game, playing a vital role in guiding the Bright Starlets to a bronze medal finish in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Her consistent scoring, relentless drives and leadership on court were crucial in South Sudan’s remarkable debut campaign, which ended with a dramatic 66 to 65 victory over Senegal in the third-place playoff.
Not only was Washington the highest scorer, she was also named to the prestigious All Star Five, the tournament’s best team, alongside Nigeria’s MVP Amy Okonkwo, Senegal’s Cierra Dillard, Uganda’s Jane Asinde, and Mali’s Sika Koné. Her selection was recognition of her all round impact and the inspiration she provided to a rising team that had never before appeared on the continental stage.
In the bronze medal match, Washington again delivered under pressure, leading all scorers and helping keep South Sudan composed after Senegal clawed back from a 16 point deficit. Alongside her, Nyamer Lual Diew sealed the win with a last second free throw, but it was Washington’s scoring power that kept South Sudan in control for much of the game.
Her overall tournament stats:
| Stat | Figure |
|---|---|
| Points per Game | 21.6 |
| Total Points Scored | 130 (in 6 games) |
| Field Goal Percentage | 48.5% |
| Assists per Game | 4.2 |
