(JUBA) – The Mayor of Juba City has asked the United Nations Mission in South Sudan to support four priority areas, including waste management and public safety, during a meeting at UNMISS headquarters.
His Worship the Mayor, Christopher Sarafino Wani Swaka, paid a courtesy visit to the mission on 24 June 2026. He met with the Special Representative of the Secretary General and senior members of the UNMISS leadership team.
The Mayor and his delegation received a warm welcome and held what were described as constructive discussions on strengthening cooperation between Juba City Council and the United Nations.
During the meeting, the Mayor stressed the importance of building a strong partnership with UNMISS and other UN agencies to address the main development needs of the City Council. He set out four strategic areas requiring joint support.
These are environmental protection and waste management, infrastructure development, security and public safety, and juvenile rehabilitation and social reintegration.
The SRSG and the UNMISS team expressed appreciation for the Mayor’s vision and his commitment to improving the welfare of Juba residents.
They stated their readiness to work closely with the City Council and showed a positive outlook on building a productive partnership. Both sides agreed on the need for continued engagement at the technical level to discuss and develop practical ways to carry out the identified priority areas.
The meeting was described as an important step towards stronger cooperation between Juba City Council and UNMISS.
Both parties share a commitment to promoting sustainable urban development, improving public services, improving security and creating opportunities for vulnerable groups within the city.
The talks ended on a positive note. Both sides expressed confidence that the proposed partnership will contribute to the growth, stability and development of Juba City and the wellbeing of its residents.
