(YEI) – A former political leader in Central Equatoria State has called on residents and leaders of the Greater Yei region to unite in efforts to bring peace and stability to the area, citing the ongoing insecurity as a threat to development and humanitarian operations.
Juma David Augustine, a well known figure in Yei River County, made the appeal through a message widely shared on WhatsApp. He urged for collective responsibility in building peace and expressed support for the state leadership, particularly under Governor Rabi Mujunj.
“As the new governor prioritises peace and stability, it requires the joint collaboration of all stakeholders,” Juma stated.
He encouraged the public to support the Governor and the state government in restoring peace and security.
Juma noted that sustainable peace is vital to unlocking socio-economic development in the region.
“Development partners and investors require a certain environment to work in,” he said, stating that without a secure environment, such opportunities would not be realised.
He expressed concern over the rising insecurity in Greater Yei, describing it as worrisome. He pointed to recent road ambushes, displacements, humanitarian service interruptions and abductions as serious threats to peace and urged for urgent and coordinated responses to address them.
According to Juma, political leaders in the southern part of Central Equatoria must set aside ideological differences and unite for the sake of innocent civilians. He emphasised that solidarity in addressing these issues must be “unconditional, with passion and empathy.”
“This is an urgent call,” he added, “The state leads, and the citizens follow.”
