Trade Minister Pledges Policy Support After Yei Tour
(YEI TOWN, YEI COUNTY) – The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, on Thursday led a senior government delegation to the Carnak Tobacco Factory in Yei County, Central Equatoria State.
According to the Trade Ministry, the visit highlighted the national focus on industrial development, private sector growth and job creation as key drivers of economic change in South Sudan.
Officials said manufacturing, including agro processing and light production, is central to the ministry’s plans to increase value addition, create steady employment and improve domestic revenue. The approach is seen as important for reducing reliance on imports and supporting local markets across the country.
The Carnak Tobacco Factory is one of the better known manufacturing sites in South Sudan and plays a role in the local supply chain in Yei and nearby areas. During the visit, the delegation reviewed the scale of operations, discussed production capacity and examined the challenges faced by manufacturers, including transport, power supply and regulatory processes.
Speaking at the factory, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang said the visit showed the government’s support for local producers. She said the aim was not only to observe operations but also to work with businesses to address barriers to growth. She also described industrial development as vital for moving South Sudan towards greater self reliance and broader economic participation.
The minister praised the factory’s management and workforce for maintaining operations despite difficult conditions, saying the jobs created by the factory were important for young people in Yei County and for wider economic stability. At the same time, she acknowledged ongoing challenges linked to infrastructure and policy coordination.
Hon. Atong said the Ministry of Trade and Industry would work to simplify procedures and respond to concerns raised by manufacturers, including costs linked to supply chains.
She said the government wanted products made in South Sudan to be known for quality and to support national pride, also adding that findings from the visit would be shared with the cabinet to help shape policies that reflect conditions on the ground and encourage secure private investment.
A press release from the Ministry said the visit formed part of wider efforts to strengthen engagement with the private sector:
In focusing on practical needs within domestic industry, the ministry aims to help build a stronger manufacturing base that supports sustainable growth and long term prosperity for South Sudan.

Kudos to Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, National Minister of Trade for the working visit to Yei River County . This is a decisive step towards boosting the manufacturing potential of the county. Apart from improvement in the Security Sector, Minister Atong\’s timely mission should be accompanied by improving access roads and provision of electricity for cottage industries.
Hopefully this visit will be extended to all counties in the country. Yes, South Sudan can feed her citizens and even export manufactured goods. All that is needed is provision of enabling environment. Amb. BK Wani.
