(YAMBIO COUNTY) – Health officials in Western Equatoria State have reported a significant increase in hepatitis B infections, with 177 people testing positive during an ongoing mass screening campaign in Yambio.
The health initiative is being spearheaded by the Azande Kingdom’s Health Department in partnership with the Western Equatoria State government and several health organisations. The screening aims to identify and contain both hepatitis B and hepatitis C, which continue to pose growing public health threats across the region.
According to Siro Peter David, the head of the Azande Kingdom’s Health Department, a total of 924 individuals had been screened by Thursday, and that number is expected to rise as the campaign progresses. Among those who tested positive were 65 men, 82 women and 10 children.
“We must raise awareness in places where people gather like churches, markets and schools,” said David. “This disease can affect anyone. Public education through campaigns and mobile screening teams is key.”
Hepatitis B is a viral infection that targets the liver. It is spread through contact with infected blood or body fluids and can lead to severe liver damage, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. While many infected individuals show no symptoms in the early stages, the virus can quietly damage the liver over time.
Though there is no complete cure, the infection can be prevented through vaccination. For chronic cases, antiviral medications are available to manage the virus and reduce health risks.
Rose Obede, Director General of the Western Equatoria State Ministry of Health, acknowledged that the region faces wider health challenges including malaria, HIV and other communicable diseases.
“We will not give up. Our children must grow up healthy to play a role in building this country,” she said.
The Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have pledged their support for the campaign. Doru Peni, a communications officer with CMMB, praised the Azande Kingdom’s leadership and said his organisation remains committed to improving community health outcomes in the state.
State Health Minister James Abdallah Arona stressed the need to extend health services beyond the town centre.
“We want to ensure people in hard to reach areas also receive testing and awareness,” he said.
Acting Governor Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa also affirmed government support. He said authorities would provide transportation and logistical backing for testing teams moving across Yambio County.
“Know your status. Get tested and seek treatment if necessary,” he urged.
