(Lainya) – Authorities in Lainya County, Central Equatoria State, have confirmed the arrival of a donation of medical supplies from a South Sudanese national living in Australia, intended to support healthcare services in the area.
The contribution comes at a time when health facilities in Lainya have been struggling with a shortage of essential medical items, limiting access to basic health care for many residents.
The donation was made by Rose Emba Juma William, a native of Lainya County currently residing in Brisbane, Australia. She is a member of the Pojulu community, an ethnic group indigenous to the region.
The supplies include boxes of face masks, isolation gowns, hand sanitizers, gloves, and sacks of medical blankets. These items are considered essential in improving hygiene and infection control in health centers.
Lainya County Commissioner Robert Lasu received the donation on behalf of the community.
Speaking during the handover, he expressed gratitude to the donor and described the assistance as timely and vital to improving healthcare delivery in the county.
He said the donated supplies, which are currently in Juba, will be transported to the Lainya County Hospital as soon as logistical arrangements are completed.
Commissioner Lasu said the support would strengthen the capacity of health workers and improve conditions in local facilities, particularly as the county continues to face critical gaps in medical resources.
Emmanuel Khamis Richard, the former Lainya County Commissioner, also welcomed the donation and praised members of the South Sudanese diaspora for continuing to support their communities back home. He commended Rose Emba Juma William for what he called a generous and patriotic gesture.
“Congratulations to sister Rose Emba Juma William for being such a responsible and generous South Sudanese out there who thinks about her people back home,” he said.
“Leave the rest who believe there is no more life in South Sudan.”
The gesture was also welcomed by local residents. Kakule Joice, a mother living in Lainya town, said the supplies would benefit women and children, who are among the most vulnerable groups in the rural areas of the county.
“I am happy for this great medical support sent to us by our sister in Australia,” she said. “Women and children are suffering in the rural parts of Lainya County and this will really help us down here.”
Lainya County, located southwest of Juba, has long faced challenges in the healthcare sector. Due to inadequate equipment and lack of personnel, many patients in the county are referred to larger facilities in Juba or neighboring Yei County.
Community leaders and health officials hope this latest donation will mark the beginning of more sustained support from the diaspora and other development partners.
There was no mention of the monetary value of the donation, but officials have emphasized its importance in strengthening basic medical care in a region that remains underserved.
