(MALAKAL) – The South Sudan Red Cross has completed a five day training programme for volunteers who are preparing to serve as Boma Health Workers in Malakal, Upper Nile State.
The training forms part of a wider humanitarian response project funded by the Swedish Red Cross and SIDA HUM.
The organisation said the sessions were designed to give volunteers the skills needed to support community health work, with a strong focus on child health and safe motherhood.
Officials explained that once all the Boma Health Initiative modules are finished, the volunteers will qualify as Boma Health Workers who can assist local communities with essential health services.
According to the South Sudan Red Cross, the training involved close cooperation with national and state health authorities. Facilitators included staff from the Ministry of Health, the State Ministry of Health, the Community Health Coordinator and the Red Cross Branch Health Officer.
The project aims to strengthen community level health services in areas with limited access to formal healthcare. Volunteers who complete the programme are expected to help improve awareness, early response and care within their respective Bomas.
The South Sudan Red Cross said it will continue to work with health partners to support more volunteers as part of its effort to improve health services across Upper Nile State.
