(JUBA) – National media stakeholders in South Sudan gathered at Gelila Hotel in Juba on Tuesday to observe the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
The event brought together representatives from government institutions, media organisations and international partners who used the platform to reflect on the challenges journalists face and the responsibility of the media to serve the public truthfully.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of the Access to Information Commission, Hon. Moyiga Nduru, urged journalists to follow ethical standards and avoid publishing information that has not been confirmed.
He said responsible journalism is essential for public trust and warned that sharing unverified reports can mislead the public and cause harm.
A representative of the Norwegian People’s Aid, Jacob Atem, said his organisation will continue to stand with journalists in South Sudan.
He said their support aims to strengthen the ability of media workers to inform and educate citizens on national issues, especially at a time when access to reliable information remains important.
UNESCO representative Jasper Okodi encouraged journalists to use their platforms with care. He reminded the audience that although the right to express opinions is protected, it is not without limits.
He said UNESCO will continue to support projects that promote quality journalism and media development both in South Sudan and globally.
The President of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS), Oyet Patrick, said the work of journalists is vital to society and deserves stronger protection.
He said journalists often take risks to keep the public informed and that improving their safety is necessary for them to carry out their duties with confidence.
Stakeholders at the event agreed that improving the safety of journalists, promoting responsible reporting and strengthening media institutions are key to creating a more informed and democratic society in South Sudan.
