(JUBA) – The new Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Hon. Yeni Samuel Costa, was formally welcomed at the Bank’s headquarters in Juba on Monday, where he set out his priorities and called for collective action to strengthen confidence in the national currency.
Staff applauded as he took office, marking his return to an institution where he previously served for many years.
Hon. Yeni, a veteran banker with thirty eight years of experience, replaces Hon. Dr. Addis Ababa Othow.
In his remarks, he said he had returned to resolve key issues affecting the Bank and the wider financial sector. He stated that he would not work alone and encouraged cooperation across all departments as the Bank enters what he described as a new phase.
He said the Bank must identify where the South Sudanese Pound has been held outside normal circulation and work to restore public trust.
He added that greater use of digital payment systems would help strengthen the currency and reduce pressure on cash.
He referred to countries such as the United States, where electronic payments are widely used, as examples of how modern systems can support financial stability.
Hon. Yeni promised to follow all laws and procedures guiding the central bank and cautioned staff against involvement in politics.
He said that any breach of regulations would attract penalties but stressed that staff would be treated fairly, as they are the main asset of the institution. He described justice and equal treatment as essential principles for good management.
First Deputy Governor Hon. Samuel Yanga Mikaya thanked President Salva Kiir Mayardit for appointing Hon. Yeni.
He explained that the new governor had previously been on leave and was now resuming his duties. Hon. Yanga briefed him on recent developments within the Bank, including the liquidity challenges that have affected digital payment services across the country.
A representative of the governor’s family, Antonieta Benjamin, also thanked President Kiir for the appointment.
She expressed appreciation on behalf of the people of Raga and the community leadership, and urged cooperation between staff and the new governor. Board members and family representatives attended the ceremony.
