(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been briefed on the restart of oil production and the payment of unpaid salaries at the national oil company, Nile Petroleum Corporation.
The briefing took place on January 14, 2026, when the Managing Director of Nilepet, Emmanuel Athiei Ayual, met the President in Juba. He informed the President that oil and gas production has resumed at the Heglig and Baboo oil fields, which are important sources of national revenue for South Sudan.
Mr Athiei also said that Nilepet has paid three months of salary arrears owed to its workers. He explained that clearing the unpaid salaries was meant to improve the welfare of employees and support stable operations at the company.
President Kiir said his government remains committed to supporting oil production as a key way to help stabilise the country’s economy. He noted that oil income plays an important role in funding government activities and supporting economic recovery.
Nilepet is South Sudan’s only national oil company. It is responsible for oil exploration, production, and managing revenues from the sector.
Oil continues to be the main source of national income for South Sudan. Steady production and regular payment of workers are important for confidence in the oil sector and for the wider economy.
